ENGLISH GRAMMAR
English grammar –
A systematic study of different rules on which a language is based is known as
grammar.
Or,
Grammar is a science of rules for forming words and combining them into
sentence.
There
are five kinds of grammar –
1.
Orthography
2.
Etymology
3.
Syntax
4.
Punctuation
5.
Prosody
Orthography – Orthography is the branch of
English Grammar in which we study about the kinds of letter.
Or,
under orthography we study twenty six letters, small letters, capital letters,
five vowels and nineteen consonants.
Letter – The units of sound used in
construction of words are called letter.
There
are two kinds of letter –
(a)
Capital letter
(b) Small letter
Capital letter – A, B, C, D,…………………...Z
are called capital letter.
Small letter – a, b, c, d,……………………… z
are called small letter.
Vowel – A vowel is a letter which can be
pronounced without the help of any other letter.
There are five vowels –
a, e, i, o and
u
Consonant – A consonant is a letter which cannot
be pronounced without the help of any vowel.
There
are nineteen consonants –
b,
c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, x and z.
Semi-vowel – A semi-vowel is a letter which has a
vowel quality but consonant function.
There are two semi-vowels –
w and y

When W and Y come to the start
of words are called consonant.
e.g. - weak,
yesterday, wonderful, you etc.
Ø
When W and Y are the mid or end
of words are called vowel.
e.g. - baby,
sorrow, sorry, throw etc.
Alphabet – A group of letters is called
alphabet.
Etymology – Etymology is the branch of English
grammar in which we study about words is called etymology.
Or,
under etymology we study parts of speech.
Word – The smallest unit of a sentence is
called word.
