PERCENTAGE
Per cent means per hundred or
for every hundred. The symbol %
is used to
denote per cent, i.e., 48 marks out of 100 is 48%.
A fraction with denominator 100
such as
is called a percent. The numerator tells the
percentage.
To convert –
(i) A fraction into a per cent, multiply
the fraction by 100, e.g.,
(ii) A ratio into a per cent, write
it as a fraction and multiply the fraction by 100,
e.g.-
(iii) A decimal into a per cent, multiply
by 100, i.e., shift the decimal point two places to the right,
e.g.- 0.025 =(0.025

(iv) A per
cent into a fraction, drop the per cent symbol (%) and divide by 100,
e.g.- 40% =

(v) A per cent into a ratio, drop the per cent symbol and form a ratio with the number
obtained after dropping the
symbol as the first term and 100 as the second term, e.g., 65% =
(vi) A per
cent into a decimal, drop per cent symbol and shift the decimal point
two places to left,
e.g.- 95% = 0.95, 4.35% = 0.0435.
To find what
per cent the first number is of second,
Divide the first number by the
second number and multiply the result by 100. First ensure that the numbers are
in the same units, i.e., 3 hours as a
